"Mai ka po mai, ka oia'i'o o Pele."
"From the night comes the truth of Pele."
- Hawaiian Chant

Â
Today, we find ourselves amidst fiery destruction, a force that feels almost apocalyptic in its intensity. Fire—the element that burns, cleanses, destroys, and creates anew—has become an undeniable presence in our lives.
As I write this, Pele, the Goddess of fire and transformation, reminds us of her dual nature. In its containment, the fire is breathtaking, a marvel of nature's power and artistry. But when those fires erupt in the heart of neighborhoods, consuming homes and memories, the awe turns swiftly into heartbreak.
Â
Fire is a profound teacher, a reflection of the impermanence of our humanity. It is a mirror of how we choose to interpret its manifestations.Â
Â
What wisdom, then, can we glean from the Goddess Pele—the Priestess of fire, the embodiment of creation and destruction? How can her power inspire us to honor the cycles of life, death, and rebirth that are etched into the fabric of existence?
Â
Both Natalie and I are deeply blessed to call the Big Island of Hawaii home, where we have the privilege of communing with the living essence of Pele, the Goddess herself. These words are but a glimpse into the vast and intricate tapestry of a culture that flows through the very roots of this sacred land, woven into every stone, every wave, and every volcanic breath. This email and invocation are offered as a humble effort to honor and preserve her spirit, keeping her fire alive by educating and connecting with the profound beauty of her essence. We invite you to join us in this sacred dance, to feel the flames of Pele’s presence, and to witness how her energy continues to shape and guide the hearts of all who are open to her transformational power.

The Story of Pele:
Pele is one of the most iconic and revered figures in Hawaiian mythology. She is the goddess of fire, volcanoes, and creation, and her stories are integral to Hawaiian culture. Through her, we see the power of nature and its duality—both creative and destructive. In researching the many different stories that are associated wtih the Goddess Pele, I am remiss to just focus on one specific story.
Â
The underlying theme of each story is that of passion, love, jealousy, and the battles between the elements of fire and water.
Â
Pele's Origins
Pele's story begins in Tahiti, where she was born to the Sky Father, Wakea, and the Earth Mother, Haumea. Her siblings include numerous other Gods and Goddesses, but Pele was uniquely associated with fire and volcanoes. The tale often says that she was sent to Hawaii by her father to find a home where she could create new land and live out her divine purpose.
Â
Her journey to the Hawaiian islands was tumultuous. Pele encountered many challenges along the way, including rivalries with her siblings and other Gods. One of the most famous tales is about Pele’s sister, Namakaokahai, the Goddess of the ocean, who chased her across the Pacific. As Pele fled, she encountered various islands and volcanic locations, each marked by fiery eruptions or volcanic activity, and it is said that she finally arrived at Kīlauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Â
Kamapua’a, the Pig God
Kamapua’a is a powerful and mischievous figure in Hawaiian mythology, a shape-shifter with the ability to transform into various forms, but most notably into a pig. His connection to Pele is filled with both passion and conflict. Kamapua’a, in his pig form, is deeply associated with the land and fertility, known for his role in nourishing the earth and transforming it with his presence. When he fell in love with Pele, the fiery Goddess of volcanoes, their attraction sparked both harmony and discord. Despite his love for her, Kamapua’a’s nature was at odds with Pele’s fierce and volatile temper. As a shape-shifter, he often attempted to woo Pele with his magic, shifting into different forms to win her affection, but his efforts were met with both passionate embraces and fiery rejection. Their relationship was a constant battle between the forces of fire and earth, water and lava—mirroring the complexities of love itself, where deep affection often leads to intense emotional conflicts. Kamapua’a’s story reflects the duality of love—how it can be both nurturing and destructive, tender and tempestuous.
Â
Lohi’au, the Handsome Lover
Lohi’au, unlike Kamapua’a, represents a more idealized and almost unattainable form of love in Pele’s life. He is a handsome, noble young man, the object of Pele’s deepest desires. Their story begins when Pele falls in love with him at first sight, feeling an immediate and intense connection. However, Lohi’au lives on a distant island, and Pele, driven by her passion, sends her sister Hi’iaka on a perilous journey to bring him to her. Hi’iaka, loyal to her sister, agrees, but the journey is fraught with dangers, both external and internal. Along the way, Hi’iaka faces numerous trials, and Pele’s jealousy grows as time passes. Eventually, Hi’iaka returns with Lohi’au, but Pele’s anger over Hi’iaka’s delays leads to her destructive rage, and she devastates her precious Ohia trees that Hi’iaka held in deep reverence.Â
Â
Pele’s myths can be seen as metaphors for the sacred union—the integration of dualities within ourselves and between partners. Sacred union is not about the absence of conflict, but the profound understanding that both light and dark, fire and water, creation and destruction must come together in harmony.Â

Pele. The Fiery One. The Mistress of Lava and Land.
The Eternal Alchemist of Creation and Destruction
Â
Her Shadow: The Inferno of Wounds and Desire
To step into Pele’s energy is to first face the searing depths of the shadow qualities we each hold:Â
Â
🌑 Victimhood: The burns of betrayal and abandonment that scorch our hearts. 🌑 Unresolved Anger: The smoldering fury that rages within, often buried beneath layers of shame and hurt.Â
🌑 Obsessive Thoughts: The cycle of frustration that fuels the fire, keeping us trapped in repetitive patterns of self-doubt and insecurity.
Â
She holds the flame to our hidden fears, inviting us to confront the lies we’ve been fed about our worth. Her "destruction" is not punishment—it is the fierce reclamation of what we’ve buried, the unspoken desires we’ve suppressed, and the wounds we’ve been too afraid to heal.
Â
Her Light: Divine Transformation and the Wisdom of the Sacred Fire
But Pele does not leave us in the blaze. She is the guide who leads us into the light:
Â
✨ Non-Duality: The unification of fire and water, destruction and creation, where we come to realize that all aspects of ourselves are sacred and necessary.
✨ Transformation: Pele embodies the raw power of metamorphosis, teaching us that liberation comes through the courageous embrace of chaos, where our deepest wounds become the catalysts for our most profound rebirths.
✨ Liberation: She shows us that true freedom is found not by resisting the fire, but by surrendering to it fully, allowing its transformative energy to reshape us from the inside out.
✨ Creativity: Pele's energy calls us to harness our raw passion, channeling the intense fire of creation to birth new realities from the depths of our soul.
Â
Pele teaches that in order to ascend, we must first descend—into the fire of our most primal wounds, our deepest desires, and our unspoken truths. Through surrender to the heat of transformation, we are reborn.
Â
Pele’s Teachings for Us Today:
Pele’s path is one of intensity and passion, a call to embrace both the beauty and the destruction inherent in life.Â
Â
She challenges us to ask:Â
🌹 Where have we let unresolved anger consume us, preventing our evolution? 🌹 What would it feel like to surrender completely to the chaos of life—to trust in the transformative power of our inner fire?Â
🌹 How can we channel our intense emotions and desires into creative forces of change, rather than allowing them to burn us from within?
Â
Her journey is not for the faint of heart. It is not tame. It is raw, alchemical, and untamed.Â
Â
Pele asks us to burn away the illusions we cling to and emerge as warriors of transformation, free from the chains of fear and alive with the fiery pulse of creation.
