"She is the gateway to infinite possibility. She is love and death entwined, the harbinger of annihilation that births renewal. In her, all opposites meet and dissolve into pure ecstasy."

- Aleister Crowley

In the swirling mists of prophecy and mysticism, the figure of Babalon emerges—a radiant, untamed archetype that calls us to the edge of existence and dares us to leap.

She is the Scarlet Woman of the Book of Revelation, "arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones," seated upon a beast with seven heads, holding a golden cup in her hand.

But what does she mean?

To Aleister Crowley and his magical system of Thelema, Babalon is not a figure of condemnation but one of ultimate liberation.

She is the Priestess who invites us to shed all falsehoods, to surrender our fear of life, and to embrace the ecstasy of divine union.

Her cup—brimming with the "blood of saints"—is a symbol of offering everything: our ego, our pride, our limitations. In this surrender, we find the doorway to true freedom and power.

The Story of Babalon:

From the ancient scriptures to Crowley’s modern Magick, Babalon represents both divine passion and the fiery destruction of all that is false.  Described in the Book of Revelation as “the woman arrayed in scarlet and purple, seated upon the beast, holding a golden cup full of abominations,” Babalon stands at the threshold of fear and liberation. To the uninitiated, she represents the fall—temptation, chaos, and sin.

But for those who see beyond the veil, she is Wisdom Herself: the Sophia, the Holy Grail, and the path to Divine Union.

  • In the Book of Revelation (17:3-6), she is described as “drunken with the blood of the saints,” a woman who wields the chaotic power of life, death, and resurrection. She rides upon the Beast, signifying humanity’s primal instincts, not to tame them, but to integrate and channel them into higher realms.

  • In Crowley’s Thelemic vision, Babalon is the sacred feminine that transcends shame, invites ecstatic union, and embraces the mysteries of existence. She demands all and offers infinite reward: the full embodiment of divinity within the human form.

Her essence has been whispered across the ages, hidden in sacred texts and burning at the edges of Revelation. To know Babalon is to confront the paradoxes of existence and the truths we fear to claim.

Aleister Crowley understood Babalon as the archetype of the Sacred Feminine, embodying a wisdom that transcends dualities.

She holds the key to the mystery of YHVH (YAWEH - the Tetragrammaton), revealing that the divine is not merely masculine or feminine but the union of opposites.

Babalon’s essence is the ecstatic alchemy that reconciles spirit and matter, heaven and earth.

Her relationship to Jesus is equally profound. As the Sacred Whore, Babalon reclaims and redeems what has been cast out.

She is the Magdalene’s shadow and light, the Sophia who guides seekers toward the truth of divine love and cosmic liberation.

Babalon. The Scarlet Woman. The Keeper of the Chalice.

The Eternal Priestess of Wisdom.

Her Shadow: The Chalice of Shame and Desire

To step into Babalon’s energy is to first face the depths of the shadow:

🌑 Abandonment: The wounds of rejection and loss that haunt us.

🌑 Shame: The belief that our desires, our bodies, and our essence are unworthy of love.

🌑 Material Obsession: The distraction of fleeting pleasures over eternal truths.

She holds the mirror to all we fear, inviting us to confront the lies we’ve been told about our sacredness. Her “abominations” are not sins—they are the secrets we bury, the desires we deny, and the wounds we hide.

Her Light: Divine Union and the Wisdom of the Holy Trinity

But Babalon does not leave us in the shadow. She is also the guide who leads us into light:

Divine Union: The marriage of opposites within us, where masculine and feminine energies meet in harmony.

The Holy Trinity: Babalon embodies the Lover, the Beloved, and the Divine, reminding us that we are both the seeker and the sought.

Wisdom: She reveals that true liberation comes not from denial but from the fearless embrace of all that we are.

Babalon teaches that to ascend, we must first descend—into our fears, our pain, and our forgotten truths. Through surrender, we are reborn.

Babalon’s Teachings for Us Today:

Babalon’s story is a mirror to our own struggles and triumphs. She challenges us to ask:

🌹 Where have we denied our desires for fear of judgment?

🌹 What would it feel like to surrender fully to life—to trust the unknown and embrace chaos?

🌹 How can we channel our wild, passionate energy into something transformative, rather than suppress it?

Her path is not an easy one. It is not polite. It is not comfortable. It is raw, alchemical, and wild. Babalon asks us to burn through the illusions we cling to and emerge as priestesses of liberation, free from fear and alive with purpose.
